How to choose and use wheelchairs?

Wheelchairs are widely used by rehabilitation therapists in the treatment of patients with lower limb disabilities, hemiplegia, paraplegia below the chest, and mobility disabilities. As a rehabilitation therapist, it is necessary to understand the characteristics of the wheelchair and choose the most suitable wheelchair and the most correct way to use it.

Do you have a thorough understanding of the choice and use of wheelchairs?

If a patient or a family member asks you how to choose and use a wheelchair, can you give a reasonable prescription for a wheelchair?

Seat width

Measure the distance between two buttocks or two strands when sitting down, and add another 5cm, that is, there is a space of 2.5cm on each side after sitting down. The seat is too narrow, the wheelchair is difficult to get up and down, hip and thigh tissue is compressed; The seat is too wide, not easy to sit, wheelchair is not convenient, both upper limbs easy to fatigue, in and out of the door is difficult.

The length of the seat

Measure the horizontal distance between the posterior hip and calf gastrocnemius muscle when sitting, and reduce the measurement result by 6.5cm.The seat is too short, the weight mainly falls on the ischium, local easy compression too much; If the seat is too long, it will oppress the sleepy, affect local blood circulation, and easily irritate the skin. For patients with short thighs or flexion contracture of hip and knee, it is better to use the short seat.

The seat cushion

For comfort and to prevent pressure sores, a cushion should be placed on the seat, using foam rubber (5~10cm thick) or gel cushion. A piece of plywood 0.6cm thick may be placed under the seat cushion to prevent seat subsidence.

Backrest height

The higher the back of a chair, the more stable, the lower the back of a chair, the greater the range of motion of upper body and upper limbs. The so-called low backrest is to measure the distance between the seat surface and the armpit (one arm or two arms extend forward horizontally) and subtract 10cm from the result. High backrest: measure the actual height from the seat to the shoulder or back pillow.

In order to meet the special needs of patients and design, such as increase handle friction surface, brake extension, anti-vibration device, anti-slip device, armrest installation arm support, wheelchair table for patients to eat, write, etc.
